February Update from the AHT Research Study into Idopathic Epilepsy.

Phase 3 of the AHT study into Idiopathic Epilepsy in the Italian Spinone is reaching its final stage. Dr Luisa De Risio and her team have been working extremely hard and hopefully now have sufficient robust cases to enable her to move to phases 4 and 5.

During the first half of 2014 the Canine Genetics team at the AHT will initiate DNA collection from these robust cases that Dr De Risio’s team has identified; the owners of these dogs will be contacted shortly and asked to provide a DNA sample from their dogs that they can collect themselves using simple cheek swabs. The DNA will be used to try to identify the mutation(s) that increase a dog’s risk of developing epilepsy, with the long term aim of developing a DNA test that breeders can use to reduce the prevalence of idiopathic epilepsy in the Italian Spinone.
