ISCGB ALL AGED FIELD TRIAL 08/01/2001
Eagle Hall Estate, North Scarle, Lincs
Hosts: Eagle Hall Estate Syndicate and Trevor Rigby
After some seven years since the first ISCGB Novice Field Trial, this was the first All Aged Trial, held on ground offered through Mr Trevor Rigby, who has helped in the training of so many Spinoni over the past six years. The benefit of this was having three Spinoni in the Trial, in addition to a German Longhaired Pointer, a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, two German Wirehaired Pointers and four German Shorthaired Pointers.
The weather had threatened rain, but stayed fair for the day with a good steady breeze, although at times the wind direction changed quite dramatically. The ground is excellent for HPR’s and offered a great variety of terrain with white grass, sugar beet, turnips, carrots, a small game strip, stubble and a small wood. The supply of game was excellent with every dog having game on their beat, with pheasant, partridge, woodcock, rabbit and hare.
We unfortunately lost seven of the 11 dogs on their first run, in the main to lack of steadiness. For the second round, Suzanne West with her Spinone, Hochpepa Burstyerbraces, had a good production on three partridge whilst working a tail wind in sugarbeet. She achieved the retrieve after walking closer to the area of fall, as the bird had landed about 350 yards away. Bob Youd with his GSP Scarlet Oak had an excellent retrieve on hare on a stubble field. Peter Bakewell with his GSP Sigourney Sandpiper, had successfully pointed and produced partridge on his first and second runs, both in sugarbeet, but these weren’t shot. He then successfully produced a cock pheasant, which was smartly retrieved.
For the third round it was decided to only run on Hochpepa Burstyerbraces and Sigourney Sandpiper again. The Spinone went first and sadly missed ground and as a consequence game was missed. The GSP thoroughly worked the beat, but had the great misfortune to miss a hare, a debate on the current KC rules regarding Hare and Snipe continues.
An excellent day overall, with unfortunately no result, despite a steady supply of game, excellent ground & fair weather. The Judges wish to thank the ISCGB, the Hosts and the Guns for a good day.
Judges – Mrs Sheila Kuban, A Panel; Mr Jonathan Shaw, Non Panel Status
